Born in 1870, Dr Suzuki was Professor of Buddhist Philosophy in Kyoto. In his day he was the greatest living authority on Zen Buddhism. Not only did he study original works in Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese and Japanese, but kept up to date with philosophy in England, France and Germany. And as well as being a scholar, he was a Buddhist.
